Shannon’s Story
Shannon Denise Melendi was the kind of young woman every parent hopes their child grows up to be — bright, kind-hearted, full of potential, and chasing big dreams.
Born on October 12, 1974, and raised in Miami, Florida, Shannon quickly became a standout — not just in academics, but also in athletics. She attended Southwest Miami High School, where she excelled as both a student and a leader. Shannon was an All-Dade County Scholar-Athlete, a fierce competitor on the soccer field, and a beloved friend and teammate. Coaches and teachers often remarked on her determination, compassion, and the quiet leadership she brought to everything she did.
After high school, Shannon set out for Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia — a prestigious school that matched her ambitions. She was studying political science and had dreams of one day becoming a lawyer, hoping to make a difference in the world through advocacy and justice. Shannon balanced her demanding coursework while working part-time at a local softball complex — showing the same drive and responsibility that had always set her apart.
Shannon’s transition into adulthood was filled with hope.
Like so many young women leaving home for the first time, she was navigating new freedoms, new friendships, and the exciting, sometimes uncertain road to independence.
But on March 26, 1994, that hopeful journey was tragically cut short.
While working at the softball complex, Shannon disappeared. Despite the desperate search efforts of her family, friends, and the wider community, Shannon never came home. Months later, investigators uncovered the horrifying truth: Shannon had been kidnapped, assaulted, and murdered by a man she should have been able to trust — an umpire at the very place she worked.
Her loss sent shockwaves through her hometown, her university, and the entire nation. For those who knew and loved her, life would never be the same. For those who only later learned her name, Shannon’s story became a haunting reminder: even strong, smart, capable young women can be vulnerable in an unprepared moment.
Our Promise to Shannon —
and to All Young Women
The Shannon Melendi Foundation was born from the grief, love, and enduring hope of those who knew her best — led by her former coach and mentor, Angel Menendez.
Our mission is simple but urgent:
To prepare and protect young women as they take their first steps into adulthood, empowering them with the tools, knowledge, and instincts that can save lives.
Through education, awareness, and proactive safety measures, we honor Shannon’s memory — ensuring that no other family must endure the heartbreak her family did.
We cannot change the past.
But by telling Shannon’s story, we can change the future.
